The Czech Research Network for Global Development and Sustainability (CRENDES) is a platform that unites and connects individual researchers and entire institutions from the Czech Republic, dedicated to researching sustainable development from the global level to the local level, with special attention to the Global South.
By nature, we are interdisciplinary, encompassing a wide range of experts from various disciplines in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and technical sciences.
What we do
- We promote mutual awareness and cooperation across Czech institutions.
- We focus on gathering relevant contacts for domestic researchers and institutions working on global development and sustainability, and connect them with practice.
- We advocate for topics of interdisciplinary research on global development and sustainability, and push for stronger financial support from domestic research funding providers.
- We contribute to the formulation of foreign policy and other public policies based on research findings.
- We advocate for critical reflection of scientific knowledge in raising awareness about global development and sustainability in the media and public debate.
- We connect the issues of global development and (un)sustainability with domestic phenomena.
- We support high-quality and research-based teaching of global development and sustainability topics at domestic educational institutions.
- We facilitate national and international cooperation, including the submission of research projects and the organisation of thematically relevant events.

Tereza Němečková
I focus my research on various aspects of global development, with a special attention to international trade and development. My territorial interest has long been Africa, which is why, in addition to my position as an associate professor of international economic relations at the Department of International Trade at the Metropolitan University Prague and partially at the Department of Political Science at the University of Hradec Králové, I also serve as the head of the research centre called the African Studies Centre at the Metropolitan University Prague. My latest research focuses on examining the dynamic changes in the geopolitics and trade of African natural resources, particularly renewable energy sources and so-called critical minerals that are important for the global green economic transformation.

Lenka Suchá
I work as a research fellow at the Department of Socio-Ecological Analysis of the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. In my research, I focus on sustainable livelihoods and socio-ecological transformation in the context of the climate crisis, combining approaches from development studies and sustainability science. At the core of my work is participatory qualitative research based on connecting actors for mutual learning and bridging different types of knowledge. I have extensive research experience in the Southern African region (Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, and South Africa), as well as in the Czech Republic. In 2021-2023, I led the Coop4Wellbeing project (funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic), which aimed to connect socio-ecological research and the practice of Czech development cooperation using the example of Zambia. Within the FoSTA-Health project (Horizon Europe), I am examining transformations in the food system in Tanzania and Malawi. In the TRANSPATH project (Horizon Europe), I am creating transformation pathways to sustainability at the intersection of energy, land use, and food production in the Czech Republic.

Zdeněk Opršal
For over 15 years, I have been working at the Department of Development and Environmental Studies at Palacký University in Olomouc. My areas of expertise include international development and development assistance (with a focus on post-communist countries and new donors) as well as the actors involved in international development. I conduct research on subnational allocations of development assistance and am also interested in the environmental aspects of development (e.g., climate finance). Given my background in natural sciences, I strive to integrate environmental and socioeconomic topics in my teaching and provide students of development studies with new perspectives, such as political ecology or environmental history. I represent the Czech Republic on the Executive Committee of EADI (European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes) and am the head of the department.
